OCTOBER 2020 NEWSLETTER
LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” - Oscar Wilde

We hope that you are enjoying the collapse of summer. Even 80 degrees is like a cool front and a perfect time to cozy up with your next read.

If you did not know, our library Board and staff are beginning to plan for a new and bigger library. Our goal is to better serve our growing community and encourage those who may not know about the free, extensive services and resources available with a DSCL card. Part of the planning includes getting your input. If you have not already filled out our ten minute Community Input Survey, please do! It is available in English and in Spanish.

Remind your friends and neighbors who may not have a DSCL card that we want to hear from them too! We are hopeful that they may be encouraged to sign up for a card and take advantage of the resources we offer.

Looking forward to seeing you on the porch, participating in a virtual or limited in-house program, or using a library computer/printer/fax/copier machine at a time you have scheduled with us.

Take care,
Marcia Atilano, Library Director
NEW AT DSCL
New Titles Added to Our DSCL OverDrive Collection!

We have added new Children's, Young Adult, and Adult Non-Fiction & Fiction titles to OverDrive. See the complete list of titles added in September here!
The TexShare Card Program Has Returned!

The TexShare Card is an amazing resource that allows you to borrow from any participating library in the state, which includes the majority of public, academic, and even some medical libraries. Please remember your responsibilities using this resource. You must follow the policies of the lending library, which may be different from our own. You must return your materials directly to that library. DSCL will not return these items for you (different from our Interlibrary Loan program, which is still not open). Some libraries may ask to see your DSCL card, your TexShare card, and your driver's license. Again, every library is different.

To get or renew a TexShare card, please call us at 512.858.7825 to schedule with the front desk. Our policy still applies and can be read here.

A Library Special on October 31st

A special Halloween Scary Story Video will be released on Saturday, Halloween Day! Watch it from the website link that will go live at 10am on the 31st.

DIY craft bags to accompany this story can be taken during Trick-or-Treat @ the Library. Please note: this STEM craft, with adult supervision, is suitable for ages 8 & up. It is not recommended for ages 7 & under due to the small sized battery, LED lights, and the copper tape needed for circuits. Remember, there will be two levels of craft bags available for pick up since there will be two Halloween story videos available on the 31st: Miss Julieta’s Discovery Time for preschool to primary ages and the special Scary Story Video for middle grade ages.
Multi-Media Virtual Fall Display

This year, the library is continuing our annual fall event - virtually! Kick your creativity into high gear and enlist all family members. Everyone is invited to submit a virtual version of their creation, and a Kindle entry is a bonus option if you or anyone in your family has not previously won a Kindle. Choose any fall theme, without blood and gore, then submit a digital photo(s) of your original creation to childrenslibrarian@dscl.org.

For full instructions and rules, click here! The deadline for submissions is October 27th by 5pm.

Cuentos en Español con Beatriz Ramirez

These special story videos will be made available on the library's YouTube channel as an "unlisted" video through a link that can be found on our website. Thank you, Beatriz, for sharing your time with our community!
International Children's Digital Library

A library for the World's children. You are invited to explore a world of books in their original laguages, literature, history, and culture. Enjoy your digital reading adventures!
Browsing Videos Available Online

Browsing videos of materials found in the Children's Wing are being created and shared on Facebook to help you "see" books and other materials that are available for reserving and front-porch pick up. We hope the videos help, in at least a small way, since in-person shelf browsing is not possible at this time.

FEATURED ONLINE RESOURCE
Search, Explore, Discover More!

The library catalog is full of search options that can help you locate your next print, eBook, or eAudiobook. All you need to do is follow these catalog search tips in order to narrow your search results:
  • Login to your account using your library card number and your password.
  • "Search All Fields" is the default for a full collection search. Use the drop down arrow to narrow the search by "Title Starts With," "Title Phrase," "Author," or "Subject."
  • "More Search Options" offers useful alternatives. You can narrow your search by selecting from three broad search fields: "Advanced Search," "Series Search," or "Subject Search."
  • "Advanced Search" offers a flexible way to narrow your search of the catalog by using one or more of the drop-down search boxes to narrow your search results by selecting "Title Starts with Phrase," "Title Contains Phrase," "Author," "Subject," "Call # Starts With," "Medium," "Material Type," and other choices. At this point, you can connect your search options by using the smaill drop boxes and add the limiters "and," "or," or "and not" to the search.
  • "Series Search" will allow you to search the catalog for a particular series. This is a handy search tool, but does not work as a keyword search so you must know the exact series name.
  • "Subject Search" begins with "Subject starting with___" and you will fill in the blank for your search. All subjects with that beginning will show as they appear in the catalog records. The number of items for each subject appear in parentheses. Clicking on a subject will take you to those resulting titles in the catalog.
