APRIL 2021 NEWSLETTER
LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Greetings!  This may sound like an April Fools’ Day message, but I promise it is not!

DSCL has been encouraging you to search our catalog when you are hunting for your next  title to read, listen to or watch. I hope you will continue to do so, and in particular be sure to use the “More Search Options” which leads to an Advanced Search. This can help you in limiting or expanding the number of results you get.

However, if you use OverDrive (eBooks and eAudiobooks) and hoopla (eBooks, eAudiobooks, Movies, Comics, TV, and Music) we are now recommending that you search BOTH of the related apps: Libby for OverDrive and the hoopla app.  Sometimes, you may find the same title available in both. For example, if you were searching for Jane Austen’s PERSUASION to read, you would see that it is available as an eBook in both OverDrive and hoopla. If the title were checked out in OverDrive, it would be available to check out in hoopla. How do I know? Because all titles in hoopla are considered “simultaneous use”, which means that multiple people can check out the same title at the same time, so they do NOT appear highlighted in pink when they are checked out. The only reason why you would not be able to check it out in hoopla is if you have met your quota of six circulations/month. Why is there a quota? Because this is the only way to manage our budget for hoopla.

Although you do see some of the titles from hoopla in our catalog, there are many more that only appear in the hoopla app. We have discovered that the enormous number of titles available in hoopla alone would overwhelm your experience searching our catalog and make it very slow and unproductive. So, for your eReading and Listening, be sure to check both Libby and hoopla!

Take care and keep reading!

Marcia Atilano, Library Director

Growing Things at the Library

The window regrowth garden is still growing, but the celery, lettuce and beets are going home with a staff member. A salad is planned!

Basil seeds have sprouted and are now growing at the library. Watch the first video as Basil seeds sprout within 4 days, amazing! Follow the library’s Facebook page for the weekly video update of our mini herb garden growing inside recycled DIY terrariums.  https://youtu.be/39ZVy0A65Sk

NEW: LIVE Zoom for Tuesday and Friday Story Times!

Hopefully, this move to an interactive program will be more like in-person story time visits. A Live Zoom story time will allow us to see each other and to interact as each parent prefers. It should be much more fun than the videos!

TEEN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
Virtual Teen Volunteer Opportunity This Summer!

The library is in the process of planning our summer reading program this year. While we will not be able to have in person volunteers again this summer, we will need teens who are 14 years of age and older for our Virtual Reading Buddy program via Zoom.

This program is a reading encouragement program that pairs each teen volunteer with a little buddy who is going into 1st or 2nd grade for a 30 min. reading encouragement session. This is not a time to teach reading, rather just a time to encourage your little buddy to read.  We schedule the sessions on Mondays for 45 min. increments throughout the day, usually between 10 and 2. The session will begin with all teens, little buddies and our staff member, Kaylee, greeting all of the group. Then you will break out into your individual Zoom session with your little buddy. After the 30 min., you will all come together again.

If you are interested in this unique, virtual volunteer opportunity, please submit a volunteer application online at https://www.dscl.org/faqs/teen-volunteers/ and we will get in touch with you soon!

The Friends Used Book & Bake Sale is Scheduled!

Saturday, May 22 is the date the Friends have optimistically chosen for a fundraising used book and bake sale. We expect the sale time to be 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Teresa Carbajal Ravet has graciously donated space at the Sententia Vera Cultural Hub for us to hold the sale on the front porch. The Hub is located at the corner of 4002 E. HWY 290 and Sunset Canyon Drive, DSTX.

Used Books Needed. In order to have a successful sale, we need donations. We have an enormous big blue bin sitting in front of The Hub just waiting for your books! Spring cleaning? Bring all your books over.

We can use most books in good condition. Please don’t donate encyclopedias, magazines, videotapes, or books that are worn out.

Any questions? Please contact Cindy at vicepresident@fodscl.org

To sign up to contribute something for the Bake Sale, contact secretary@fodscl.org

Thanks for your generosity in contributing.
