November 2021 NEWSLETTER
LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR

Greetings!

Did you have your head buried in a book and when you looked up it was November? We have the same feeling around here. The end of the year is coming quickly, and we are thankful for your continued visits and attendance to our many programs. Do remember to check our “Calendar” tab to see what is upcoming.

I want to thank you for your responses to the trials for U.S. Dailies, Value Line and PressReader. I am still making a decision about which of these and possibly one more eResource will become available to you in 2022. You will hear about my choice in December. Until then, keep reading, listening and watching and be sure to reach out to us with any questions. Take care!

It's Dinovember Time!

Dinovember is the month that dinosaurs, turkeys, and Thanksgiving visits the library. Join the whimsical fun in the kids’ room during Dinovember!

Why Dinovember?

Why not? Let’s have a little fun during November and enjoy dinosaurs, Thanksgiving, turkeys, and interesting books at the same time! After all, some scientists do say that our Thanksgiving bird is a modern day relative of some dinosaurs, including the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex. FYI: They share a “furcula” or wishbone!

Paint a Turkey, Pixel by Pixel with Stickers - A Group
Effort

Help Complete the Turkey Mosaic Poster Located on the Stage.
Remember, turkeys are part of Dinovember!

All ages, kids to adults, are invited to help “paint” our large Turkey Mosaic Poster located on the stage using colored ½” square stickers. As the stickers are added, the picture begins to appear. Let’s work together and finish the turkey as early as possible in November.

Poster is 40" X 36" so there are plenty of 1/2" stickers.

Note: please select one of the small color groups of stickers and attach them ALL in their appropriate spots. Feel free to add more, but please finish all stickers in any group you select. Afterward, throw away the empty backings in the blue recycling bin.

.

Dinosaurs are Everywhere!

Go on a Dinosaur Hunt in the Children’s Room and COUNT the plastic dinosaurs you discover hiding. Look high and low and in between! The dinosaur numbers will grow weekly, and they will seek out new hiding places each week, so visit often during November! Use the provided tally sheets for tracking your counted dinos.
Note to caregivers: little ones may want to gather the dinos like an egg hunt, please help them count instead of picking up the dinosaurs. Earn a dinosaur prize for counting a minimum number weekly, the prize changes each week.

Create a Dinosaur for Dinovember!

Create a 3-Dimensonal DINOSAUR in your choice of mediums. Sculpt in clay, opt for tinfoil art, Paper-Mache, Lego Bricks, or whatever you prefer. Please complete your DINOSAUR by Nov. 15 and bring it to the Children’s Room for display by that date! The winning 3-D DINOSAURs will be chosen by library visitors’ votes during Nov. 16-29. The top three winners will receive a Book and a Certificate.

The eligible artist of the top voted 3-D Dinosaur  will recieve a Kindle HD8 on November 30.
Kindle eligibility is based on no more than one Kindle per household.

Dinovember Book Bundle to be Awarded to a Lucky Artist!

Ages 4-8 are invited to color a Dinosaur or Turkey Coloring Sheet to display in the Children’s Room. If you add your name, age, phone number and email to the back of the sheet – you are entered in the Dinovember Book Bundle Drawing that will take place on Nov. 22.

November is Picture Book Month

Keep your eyes open for special book displays highlighting some very talented author/illustrators during November. Library Facebook posts will also feature Biographical info and a short list of books.

 Dinovember Book Displays
In the children's library, dinosaur books, turkey books, and Thanksgiving books will have featured spots during November. Come and see what there is to check out this month!
Reading Lists Available Online!

Did you know that the Library Website has a KID’S page with seventeen different reading lists containing book suggestions for children ages 12 and younger? Each of the books are even linked to the catalog. This way, you can jump straight over to the book’s information and even reserve it right away!

One of these featured lists is the 2x2 Reading List (for Age 2 to Grade 2) which is an annual list of twenty books, compiled by a division of the Texas Library Association. These books encourage family reading as well as voluntary reading, many of them even have parent/child activity suggestions inside the front cover. To help you find these books when visiting the Library, we have placed a 2x2 label above their normal spine label.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early reading program which encourages parents and caregivers to provide early learning experiences by reading aloud with their children ages birth to five. 1,000 Books sounds like a huge goal,
but this isn’t a race, you have until your child enters kindergarten to reach 1,000 books. Select books of interest and simply read aloud together. And yes, books read during storytime do count as do those “read it to me again and again” books.

Families are reminded of the special rewards waiting for them as each of the 100 book milestones are reached. Simply visit the library periodically with your child and ask for their reading rewards. When the 1,000 Book Goal is reached, your young reader receives a very special reward and a 1,000 Book Leaf they may add it to the library’s Reading Tree!

It is simple and easy to register and track books as you read together

The Friends of the Library are excited to announce that the date and location for 2022 Pouring Over Books has been set.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 27, 2022, at The Prospect House, and join us for beverages, bites, music, and a fun evening with a Texas author. Each year we have an auction featuring items from local businesses, art, gift certificates, and a marvelous assortment of gift baskets, too.

We'll be announcing more details soon but we're looking forward to getting together. This is our major fundraiser of the year so we sure appreciate your support.

If your business would like to be a Sponsor please visit our website for all the details or email President@fodscl.org

The Friends will have a booth at the popular Christmas on Mercer event, Saturday, December 4. We will have like-new children's books for sale and a raffle of Holiday Gift Baskets, too.

We need children's books in great shape for our Christmas event. If you have some to donate, you can drop them off in the Big Blue Bin in front of the Sententia Vera Cultural Hub. We appreciate their ongoing support of all the Friends projects so stop in and get a cup of coffee while you're there.

Of course, you can also donate books of all kinds for our next sale, too. Please be mindful to only donate useable books in good condition- it makes our sorting so much easier! Thank you for your help.

And always, we welcome you to Join the Friends directly from our website. Your support makes it possible for the Friends to donate money to the Library each year, for programs and events, especially for children.

Thanks,

Cindy
